Description
A 23-year library Dominus from Christian Moueix’s Napanook vineyard — the 2003 is fully mature, Bordeaux-leaning, and drinking now.
Taste
Black currant, plum, cedar, tobacco leaf, and forest floor, with a roasted-coffee edge. Sweet, fine tannin and a long savory finish — closer to Pauillac than to modern Napa.
Region
From the Napanook vineyard in Yountville, Napa Valley. Dominus is the project of Christian Moueix, longtime owner of Château Pétrus in Pomerol — a Bordeaux-style Napa Cab blend. The 2003 is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot; 4,800 cases were made.
About This Wine

Best For
2003 birth-year or anniversary gift, milestone steak dinner, Dominus vertical alongside the 2020, collector library bottle
For Who
Collectors filling a Dominus vertical, gift recipients marking 2003, dinner hosts who want a mature Napa Cab without waiting
Similar To
If you like mature Opus One, Ridge Monte Bello from the 2000s, or classified Bordeaux at 20 years, this is the same register — Bordeaux structure, now at peak.
Pairing
Aged ribeye, braised short rib, lamb shank, roast duck, wild mushroom dishes, Korean BBQ (galbi), aged Gouda
Drink Window
Drink now through 2028. Fully mature — no further cellar time needed.
Collector Note
2003 was a cool, late Napa vintage — harvest ran into November after a wet spring — which gave Dominus a more Bordeaux-like frame than the ripe years around it. Robert Parker rated it 95 points and, on re-tasting in 2013, called for drinking over the following 15 years. At 23 years, provenance matters: check fill level and storage history. Decant 45–60 minutes; serve at 62–65°F.
Mood
Reverent, library, classical, settled
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is a 2003 Napa Cab past its peak?
A: No. Dominus is built for 25–30 years, and the 2003’s cooler, later vintage gave it the acid to age slowly. It is in its mature window — cedar and tobacco alongside the fruit — and should hold through 2028.
Q: How does the 2003 compare to the 2020 Dominus?
A: Same vineyard, same Moueix approach, two eras. The 2020 is a cellar bottle for 2028 onward; the 2003 is what that structure becomes after two decades. Open them side by side for a textbook vertical.
Q: How should I serve a 23-year Dominus?
A: Stand the bottle upright a day ahead so sediment settles, decant gently for 45–60 minutes, and serve at 62–65°F in a large Bordeaux glass. Finish it the same evening — mature wine fades fast once open.
